The Master of Dew, Two Different Times but Same Reality.
Back to the future is the only way we can describe the spirit with which “The Master of The Dew” has been written. We are in 2021; 77 years since Jacques Roumain wrote this masterpiece, we are still living similar scenarios repeatedly. Haiti’s ongoing situation divides the country into three major groups: the government, the opposition, and the youth, who no longer believe in career politicians. Each party is blaming each other for Haiti’s state of poverty; it is the government the opposition says, but new generations blame it on both career politicians and the current government. Christian people are praying for God to deliver Haiti from this devil, and Voodooists are offering all kinds of sacrifices to their gods for them to save their beloved country. Who is at fault? Who is going to take responsibility to do the right thing to stop poverty in this country?
Like people in the village, people in present Haiti doubt their own fellow citizens’ capacity to resolve their poverty problem.
While the answers might be as complex as the questions, we can’t help but establish the vivid connection between Manuel’s village situation and Haiti’s ongoing situation today.
