Savannah, Georgia’s Historical Center: A Journey Through Time
In the southeastern corner of the United States lies one of the nation’s most treasured cities, known for its old-world charm, intricate architecture, and hauntingly beautiful squares. Savannah, Georgia, a city that has seen centuries pass by its cobblestone streets, continues to captivate visitors with its timeless allure. The heart of this magnetism emanates from its historic center, a testament to the city’s rich past and its undying spirit.
Established in 1733 by General James Oglethorpe, Savannah was the first city in the then-new colony of Georgia. It was designed with a unique layout — a series of grids featuring wide streets intertwined with lush green squares. Today, 22 of the original 24 squares remain as serene spots for relaxation and reflection amidst the urban landscape.
Savannah is also home to the monument of the largest unit of African descent who fought in the American Revolution. They are considered the Brave Les Chasseurs Volontaire de Saint Domingue from Haiti. A regiment consisted of free men who volunteered for a campaign to capture Savannah from the British in 1779.
